Mindanao People’s Peace Movement (MPPM) is a tri-people, grassroots, multi-sectoral, peace alliance/coalition that: Commits to work for just peace and sustainable development through various initiatives using peaceful means in Mindanao, Sulu, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi and Palawan (MinSuBaTaPa)”. Builds trust and confidence between and among the tri-people; Works to attain the right to self-determination of the tri-people; and
Mobilizes the broadest number of people from the grassroots and all sectors to participate in peacebuilding processes.
Born on June 2000 at the height of the former President Joseph E. Estrada’s All-Out-War Policy in Mindanao, the movement started as a forum to discuss alternatives to the cycle of war and violence in Mindanao. Thus, during its first summit, it came out with a peoples’ proposal foremost of which was declaring war as NOT the solution to the Mindanao conflict. Through the years, it continued to be a venue for the grassroots tri-people to come together, to openly discuss, debate the issues and concerns confronting them and collectively seeking for alternatives to these concerns. It has also fostered understanding and respect for each people’s distinct culture, traditions and beliefs. More importantly, it created a strong solidarity for the aspirations and struggles to uphold the right to self-determination of each people.
MPPM is a story of the collective struggle of the tri-peoples in Mindanao in their continued quest for peace through peaceful means. Guided on the belief that through the active participation of the grassroots tri-people in determining its future, genuine peace and sustainable development can and will be attained and be inherited by the next and future generations. FACT-FINDING MISSION: UNRAVELING STORIES OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN LANAO DEL NORTE, LANAO DEL SUR AND LANAO DEL NORTE In times of war, human rights had always been gravely violated and as considered petty side-by-side the objectives of warfare: to render the enemy incapable and to eventually bring about "peace and order" in the conlict zones. Nothing had been said and done to seek justice for those whose rights to live peacefully in their communities had been set aside and been trampled upon due to the "greater need" of securing the public populace from the terrors of rebellion. This merely implies that civilians had remained as collateral damages of the war and their lives and human dignity can be neglected or sacrificed when the situation permits it. In response to this human rights crisis, the Mindanao Peoples' Peace Movement (MPPM), Alyansa ng mga Mamamayan para sa Karapatang Pantao (AMKP) or Peoples' Alliance for Human Rights (PAHR) and Task Force Civilian Protection (TFCP) conducted a fact-finding mission with main purpose of unraveling stories of human rights violations (HRVs) in Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, North Cotabato and Maguindanao on October 12-18, 2008.
